Pearl

The pearl mouse has a delicate shade, and is known for its big bold eyes. At present this is a rare variety although it has won top homours in the past.

Fertility

It has been said that pearls can be reluctant breeders. Whether this is a product of inbreeding or just a problem with the variety I cannot say. I have never bred pearls myself and as such have to bow down to those with the practical experience. Those who have bred pearls have remarked that while bucks are normally fertile, the does seem to be infertile or have litters that do not do well after they are weaned.

Problems

Marks on the Coat: Some pearls will not get to three months before blotchy marks appear on their coats.

Outcrosses

One outcross to the pearl is the chinchilla. In the first generation this will produce agouti tans, which should be put back to a pearl. This will produce a range of mice, among which pearls of varied appearance will have been achieved. Some will be dark on top but white at the base, some acceptable pearls (standard) and perhaps some with a yellow hue over the tan distribution area.
