Rex

The name rex is a little confusing; in the UK the gene called rex (Re) is shown under the name astrex, whereas the gene that causes what the UK refers to as rex is actually the same gene responsible for fuzzy "hairless" mice (fz).
Rex mice have a curly afro-like coat and remain unstandardised in the UK. The gene is recessive and reasonably easy to find in the hands of pet and feeder breeders. The usual appearance of fz mice is sparsely furred, so careful selection for dense coats must be employed to produce examples like the one pictured.
